One important thing about monitoring is alerting: we should alert you if something goes wrong. In this article read about alerting methods UptimeChecker supports; and how to set up them.

UptimeChecker currently supports three different alerting methods:

  • Email
  • SMS
  • Slack

It is pretty easy to set up any of them; first step is to Log In to your Dashboard, and then click "Alarm Contacts". This will open a list with your existing Alarm contacts, and the button to add a new one.

Email

Click Create new contact button, popup will appear. In the Contact type dropdown select Email, enter desired email address in the Address field, and optionally, enter Friendly Name that will be used on the dashboard to represent this alarm contact instead of the full email address.

After entering the data, just click Add contact to save and close popup. New contact will be added to the list of your contacts, and Verification status column will read Not Verified - check your email and follow instructions with Resend button. We will send you verification email immediately, so you should check your inbox (and SPAM folder if you didn't received confirmation mail), and click confirmation link to finish.

That's all, you just set up new email alarm contact! If you want to receive alarms to this contact for existing monitors, go to your monitors list, click edit on desired monitor, enable the alarm contact in the Alarm destinations section for this monitor and click Update.

SMS

Click Create new contact button, popup will appear. In the Contact type dropdown select SMS, enter desired mobile phone number in the Number field, and optionally, enter Friendly Name that will be used on the dashboard to represent this alarm contact instead of the full email address.

After entering data, just click "Add contact" to save and close the popup. New contact will be added to the list of your contacts, and Verification status column will read Please enter verification code you received with Verify and Resend buttons. We'll send you verification code as SMS message immediately, so you should check your phone and enter received code in the verification filed in the contact list, and click Verify.

That's all, you just set up new email alarm contact! If you want to receive alarms to this contact for existing monitors, same as for email contacts, go to your monitors list, click edit on desired monitor, enable the alarm contact in the Alarm destinations section for this monitor and click Update.

Slack

Slack is a little bit different than previous two methods. To start, first thing to do is to set up Incoming WebHook on Slack's web pages. Theirs help article about that topic is HERE. It is actually pretty easy, so we will list steps here:

  • Visit the Incoming Webhooks page in the Slack App Directory.
  • Click Add Configuration.
  • Choose the channel your Incoming Webhook will post messages to.
  • Click Add Incoming Webhooks Integration.
  • Here, you can add a descriptive label, name or icon to your Webhook.
  • Click Save Settings to finish.

Once you have finished with hook configuration, Slack will provide you with hook URL, that is URL you will use in Slack alarm contact configuration in next steps.

Click Create new contact button, popup will appear. In the Contact type dropdown select Slack, enter hook URL in the URL field, and optionally, enter Friendly Name that will be used on the dashboard to display this alarm contact instead of full URL.

That's all, you don't have to verify contact like SMS or email, because you are verified by the fact you have that secret hook URL! If you want to receive alarms to this contact for existing monitors, same as for email or SMS contacts, go to your monitors list, click edit on desired monitor, enable the alarm contact in Alarm destinations section for this monitor and click Update.

We hope you are all set up now, but in case you have any questions don't hesitate to contact us at support@uptimechecker.org and we will be glad to help!
